Harvest When Fully Grown: Chayote fruits are typically ready for harvest when they reach their full size, usually 8-12 cm in length. The skin should be firm, and the fruit should feel heavy for its size.
Check for Color and Texture: The skin of a mature chayote will usually be a consistent green color, and the texture will be firm. If it’s still soft or light in color, it may not be fully mature.
Use Clean, Sharp Tools: Use a sharp knife or garden scissors to cut the chayote from the vine. Cut the fruit carefully to avoid damaging the plant or the fruit itself.
Harvesting in the Morning: Harvest chayote in the early morning when the fruit is cool. This reduces the chance of spoilage and helps the fruit retain its freshness.
Chayote greens are also edible.
